This piece is a rare and distinctive example of BORO and SASHIKO craftsmanship from the Taisho era (1912–1926), created in Akita Prefecture. It incorporates a unique technique in which washi (traditional Japanese paper) is woven into the weft threads, combining both utility and aesthetic beauty.

During the Taisho period, while Japan was experiencing rapid modernization, rural areas like Akita continued to rely on self-sufficient lifestyles rooted in tradition. In these regions, fabric was a precious resource. People reused and layered old cloth repeatedly, repairing it over time—a practice that gave rise to the culture of BORO, or “ragged” textiles, which embody the philosophy of “mottainai” (waste not, want not).

SASHIKO, a method of reinforcing fabric through decorative stitching, was originally developed for warmth and durability. Over time, the repetition of this practical technique gave way to refined geometric patterns. In rural homes, particularly during the long winter months, women carefully stitched each line of SASHIKO by hand, infusing their work with love, responsibility, and quiet devotion to their families.

The washi paper woven into this piece is a continuation of traditional materials once used by common people for clothing and household goods, such as shifu (paper cloth) and kamiko (paper garments). Washi’s lightness, breathability, and distinctive texture set it apart from fabric, and when combined with SASHIKO stitching, it produces a serene depth and tactile richness. As the material softens with use, it gains a unique warmth and character—an imprint of time itself.

In this way, the fusion of BORO, SASHIKO, and washi—born naturally from daily life in the Taisho era—transcends mere repair or craft. It represents a cultural legacy rooted in the aesthetics of functionality and regeneration.

This piece continues to breathe with the spirit of handwork passed down through generations, quietly expressing the beauty found in everyday life.
