SASHIKO in the Echizen Province during the Taisho era had distinct regional characteristics. The cold climate and local lifestyle significantly influenced the style and function of SASHIKO in this area.

In Echizen, SASHIKO was primarily used for insulation and reinforcement. The harsh winters necessitated the use of thick SASHIKO stitching on clothing, futons, and cushions to enhance warmth. Originally, SASHIKO was applied to items such as futons and kotatsu covers, with a quilting technique that involved adding cotton filling to increase insulation. Additionally, garments such as kimonos and hanten featured SASHIKO stitching on high-wear areas for reinforcement.

Unlike other regions where SASHIKO often featured decorative and elaborate patterns, Echizen’s SASHIKO prioritized practicality, showcasing simple geometric patterns such as those seen on the sleeves and collars in the images. Common motifs included straight vertical and horizontal lines, squares, and diamond shapes, all with tightly packed stitches. The thread colors often involved white or natural cotton thread on indigo-dyed fabric, resulting in a highly durable finish.
