Black Raku, Red and Black Tea Bowl
Black Raku, Red and Black Tea Bowl
This is a black Raku tea with a distinctive red color, known as shu-kuro.
The black Raku Chaen color comes from the iron contained in Kamogawa stone, which is the main component of the glaze.
Kuroraku firing is usually carried out in a low-oxygen environment, known as reduction firing.
This Ochaen ware is made by applying multiple layers of copper paint to Kamogawa stone and then undergoing reduction firing to achieve its red color.
*Copper has the characteristic of turning blue when fired in an oxidation process and turning red when fired in a reduction process (a process that reduces the oxygen concentration in the kiln).
